I baked my first cake when my daughter Mashal, turned 1. Even though we lived in the pastry capital of the world at that time, Paris, France, I felt that I wanted to celebrate this special occasion by venturing into the world of baking. To my amazement, I loved the baking experience, and people seemed to enjoy the cake! I started to acquire cooking and baking books to teach myself about this fascinating science called baking! I baked for everyone, and for every occasion, and gained more and more knowledge and experience, and also made every mistake there is to be made, and tried to learn from it.
Over the years, my husband Kamran and I, along with our lovely daughters Mashal and Minha, lived in many countries and experienced their rich cultures including UK, France, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Dubai, Oman and Saudi Arabia and visited West Africa. They are my biggest supporters, as well as my biggest critics! I took cake decorating classes, and combined my love for baking with that of cake decorating and started making cakes and desserts to order.
After a few years into being self-taught and having catered to all kinds of social gatherings, office functions, small and large parties and weddings, I realized that I needed formal training, so I enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu, London, England. There, the Chefs instilled in me the importance of quality, hard work and a strong work ethic.
After finishing my training, I started teaching baking and cake decorating classes, developing my own recipes, using everything as inspiration, including colours and flavours around me. I worked as a Wilton Method Instructor, and then developed my own sugar craft course, starting from the very basic to the advanced level of all mediums of sugar craft, including buttercream icings, gum and sugar paste, fondant, pastillage, etc.
Moving around and living in different countries and cultures has given me an exposure to, and experience with flavours, that I try to utilize in my baking and desserts. In addition to my classic French training background, I love to experiment flavours and textures, and try to come up with combinations that are not commonly used. I am finally realizing my long term dream of owning and operating my very own European style dessert bakery, with an international flair, and hope that it can have a place in this lovely town of Kingston, that we are now proud to call home!
